42 young master and PhD students as well as junior university teachers and specialists from government agencies and research institutions participated into the two-week 4th CAWa Summer School “Methods and Tools for the Assessment and Monitoring of Central Asian Water and Land Resources” (June 5-17, 2017) that was hosted by the German-Kazakh University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Participants came from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan as well as from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
During the first week (June 5-8, 2017), trainers from the Department of Remote Sensing at the University of Würzburg (Lucia Morper-Busch and Dimo Dimov) together with two co-trainers from Uzbekistan (Sherzod Zaitov, SIC ICWC) and Kazakhstan (Almas Kitapbayev, DKU) trained the participants in the use of open-source GIS software (QGIS Desktop-2.18 with Orfeo Toolbox and several plugins) for spatial analyses and in the processing, analyses, and interpretation of satellite images (e.g., raster image analysis and land use classification). Furthermore, they provided an overview of remote sensing applications for water and land resource monitoring and introduced the participants into the online information tool WUEMoCA (Water Use Efficiency Monitor in Central Asia) that is developed at the Department of Remote Sensing in Würzburg together with Central Asian partners.

This year’s CAWa Summer School was already the fourth in a row. It was organized by the CAWa Project (funded by the German Federal Foreign Office; http://www.cawa-project.net) and by the German-Kazakh University in Almaty (Kazakhstan) in cooperation with the Nazarbayev University (Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering) in Astana (Kazakhstan) and the Fribourg University (Physical Geography) in Fribourg (Switzerland). Focus was set on innovative methods and tools for the analysis and monitoring of water and land resources in Central Asia that are of great value in integrated water and land resource management. Therefore, theoretical lectures and practical exercises were combined with discussion sessions on the implementation of new methods and instruments for managing the water and land resources. The program included an in-depth introduction to GIS, an overview of remote sensing applications for water and land resource monitoring, an introduction to climatological data analysis, and an introduction to glaciology.

Following the purchase and operaration of our two low-budget UAVs suring 2016 and 2017, a best practice tutorial of how to use the devices was written by Marius Röder, Steven Hill and Hooman Latifi, and it is now available in two English and German versions. This tutorial assumes no prior knowledge of the reader on handling low-budget Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in ecological and environmental contexts. It initially includes general infos on preperation and constellation of a typical UAV system, followed by instructions on planning and implementation of UAV flights using the available commercial software, importing the acquired imagery, relative orientation, optimization of camera parameters, generation of dense point clouds and finally digital surface modeling of the point clouds. The tutorial eventually includes lessons learned, tipps and tricks on further processing and potential applications of the UAV topographic products.

After the semester holidays, we welcome our EAGLE students back to their second semester!
Some of them already took the chance to take part in a short course on landscape ecology for wetland monitoring and management with QGIS given by the ERASMUS lecturer Dr. Aurelie Davranche (more) the last two days.
Today, the course “Advanced spatial analysis for geoscientists – object-oriented image analysis” started. It is a hands-on-data-seminar jointly given by our colleagues Dr. Michael Thiel, who will teach eCognition during the summer term, and Dr. Christian Geiss who will be at our department until the end of the week. Christian is an invited guest lecturer from DLR’s Remote Sensing Data Center (Department: Geo-Risks and Civil Security) and he is working on mapping and characterization of urban areas with respect to risk and vulnerability assessment. Application is now open for those interested in participating in the training course funded by the European Facility for Airborne Research (EUFAR) through EU’s 7th Framework Programme will be held at the Bavarian Forest National Park and DLR from 3th to 14th of July 2017. In this training course, the special skills required for processing the new generation of airborne hyperspectral, thermal, and LiDAR data for retrieving essential biodiversity variables in forest ecosystems will be presented. The course features Dr. Hooman Latifi from the Dept. of Remote Sensing of the University of Würzburg.
The ground data collection that will be performed during the first week of the training course at the Bavarian Forest National Park aims to provide the participants (PhD students, post-docs and university lecturers) with knowhow on tools (field spectroscopy, thermal spectrometry and terrestrial LiDAR) and measurement techniques to collect different vegetation variables. In addition, an airborne campaign with a NERC Twin Otter for the concurrent acquisitions of hyperspectral imaging data in visible, near-infrared, shortwave-infrared and longwave-infrared (thermal) wavelengths as well as LiDAR data (with full wave form component) will be organised during the training course if the weather conditions allow.
Data acquired during the training course as well as archived data will be processed and analysed in the hands-on sessions with the support of experienced users of airborne facilities and form the basis for the final scientific report. RS4forestEBV data will also be made available after the training course via the EUFAR website, accessible to all EUFAR registered members.
Furthermore, during the second week, participants will be able to attend certain sessions of the 2nd International Conference on Airborne Research for the Environment (ICARE) that will be held simultaneously on the DLR premises from 10 -13 July 2017.
The application is opened to apply for the EAGLE M.Sc. program starting in winter 2017 (mid of October).
