Sophia Wiesböck will do her BSc thesis on the importance of fCover and Lidar data to explain home range sizes of red deer in the Nationalpark Bavarian Forest. Sophia will compute fCover on different spatial resolutions using different data sets and make it comparable with Lidar data. This will allow us to analyse the explanatory power of these data sets for home ranges of different red deer individuals in the Nationalpark. We welcome Sarah Sophia Malec as new MSc student. Her thesis in done in close collaboration with DLR-EOC (Dr. Derek Rogge & Dr. Uta Heiden) on “Assessment of Soil degradation in Costa Rica using reflectance hyperspectral and simulated EnMAP imagery”. Sarah will work with hyperspectral imagery from Costa Rica and use spatial statistical models to analyse soil degradation. The Department of Remote Sensing at the University of Wuerzburg, Germany, seeks to appoint a PhD student with strong interest or background knowledge of remote sensing, spatial modelling and biodiversity. The context for this position is the on going modification and variation of our environment and its impact on animal movement. We are seeking a person capable of developing spatially explicit models to predict the effects of environmental variation and urban growth on animal movement patterns in Central Europe. Significant data for calibration will be available. PostDoc position: land surface dynamics in the Mekong Basin

from January onwards we are looking at the DLR (German Aerospace Center, Munich, Germany) for a PostDoc for our large, cross-disciplinary project dealing with the large Mekong Basin in Southeast Asia. Focus will be the analyses of land surface dynamics in the trans-boundary Mekong Basin; an area 2.5 times the size of Germany, and covering all climate zones from high alpine to sub-tropical / tropical. Method-wise, time series analyses based on MODIS, Sentinel-3, Landsat, and Sentinel-1/2 will be undertaken. new article: Ten Ways Remote Sensing Can Contribute to Conservation

Based on a workshop we had last year in the US, organized by WCS, Robert Rose and funded by NASA we developed the most important ten ways remote sensing can contribute to conservation success. These approaches were developed out of 200+ submitted ideas and discussed by the workshop participants. The article gives a very good overview how remote sensing can help conservation. In an effort to increase conservation effectiveness through the use of Earth observation technologies, a group of remote sensing scientists affiliated with government and academic institutions and conservation organizations identified 10 questions in conservation for which the potential to be answered would be greatly increased by use of remotely sensed data and analyses of those data. Our goals were to increase conservation practitioners’ use of remote sensing to support their work, increase collaboration between the conservation science and remote sensing communities, identify and develop new and innovative uses of remote sensing for advancing conservation science, provide guidance to space agencies on how future satellite missions can support conservation science, and generate support from the public and private sector in the use of remote sensing data to address the 10 conservation questions.
